Understanding People Who Have Bipolar Disorder Symptoms


It is often difficult to live with a person who suffers from bipolar disorder. Bipolar people can experience dramatic mood swings over which they have little control. At one point in their cycle, they may be extremely euphoriant, self-confident, and aggressive, but this will pass and they will become depressive, listless, and self-destructive. Bipolar people are hypersensitive and can easily be set off by the smallest action or remark. Yes, bipolar people are difficult, but this is due to the mental illness that they have, which requires understanding and sympathy on our part.

To understand someone who has bipolar disorder, think of some of your own mood swings. There is a time when your emotional state is very high, and also when it is very low. Sometimes the emotions you feel in either of these states can be overwhelming. Normally, we come out of these states after a few hours. In the case of a bipolar person, however, these emotional states can last for weeks or even months. And the bipolar person cannot simply snap out of it without therapy or medication.

You understand the bipolar people often cannot help their actions. Their behavior is motivated by uncontrolled mood swings. A bipolar person in the manic state, or emotional high, is characterized by delusions of grandeur, hallucinations, optimism that defies reality, recklessness, over aggressiveness, lack of inhibition, hypersexuality, hyperactivity, and overweening self-confidence. A bipolar person in the depressive state is characterized by unrelenting sadness, moodiness, hypersensitivity, irritability, low self-esteem, extreme lethargy, lack of motivation, social withdrawal, and thoughts of suicide.

A person suffering from bipolar disorder may have no idea of the severity of his or her illness. Such a person may not realize the impact of his or her mood swings on other people, even close friends and family. Someone often has to intervene on their behalf and urge the bipolar person to seek professional help. People with the disorder need to be treated by a mental health expert and may have to take medication. It is important for others to understand that bipolar disorder is a debilitating illness, and the person who has it is in great need of help. Millions of Americans suffer from bipolar disorder. Someone you know could very well have it.
